HEINEKEN and Einride have jointly launched a groundbreaking cross-border initiative to revolutionize freight transport and significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. By introducing electric freight transport powered by renewable energy between HEINEKEN's brewery in Den Bosch, Netherlands, and the distribution center in Duisburg, Germany, an annual reduction of approximately 930 tons of CO² emissions is expected. This is a crucial first step towards achieving carbon-neutral transport solutions. With HEINEKEN's overarching goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, where logistics accounts for 12% of the total carbon footprint, this collaboration is of great significance.
Arjen van der Woude, Director of Strategic Procurement Supply Chain at HEINEKEN, emphasized the pivotal role of logistics in achieving the company's zero-emission commitments. He highlighted battery electric technology as a leader in carbon-neutralizing road transport and praised Einride for their expertise, network, and experience in delivering long-term, comprehensive solutions for electric freight capacity under competitive conditions. Einride's ability to coordinate equipment manufacturers, transport companies, carriers, drivers, and authorities to effectively organize logistics in critical network segments confirms them as a valuable partner.
In the first phase of the project, Einride's offering is fully implemented, including electric trucks running on renewable energy, the establishment of charging infrastructure, and the integration of Einride Saga, an AI-driven operating system that controls the entire ecosystem. A starting fleet consisting of five Mercedes eActros 300 trucks will daily transport ten fully loaded trailers, covering approximately 540 km per truck. The charging infrastructure, based on Kempower charging solutions and integrated with Saga, will leverage data-driven insights to optimize routes, minimize energy consumption, and closely monitor emission reductions. Einride has previously achieved significant success in reducing CO² emissions from vehicles used by their business partners by up to 95% compared to conventional diesel alternatives.
Robert Ziegler, General Manager EMEA at Einride, expressed enthusiasm for the exciting collaboration with HEINEKEN and considered them a perfect partner with a strong commitment to reducing emissions.
“At Einride, with a highly ambitious, sustainable driven team, we see HEINEKEN as an ideal partner on a clearly defined path to reduce emissions. As HEINEKEN’s actions towards net-zero span across the entire value chain, we are happy to help them achieve this goal by joining forces on a cross-border electrification journey.”
This partnership marks the beginning of a joint effort to further reduce emissions and promote operations, drivers, and business across borders, with future plans to expand the collaboration to more countries in the near future.
